Located in downtown Denver, the 27,000 square foot museum cost approximately $16 million, and was the first museum in the U.S. to achieve LEED Gold certification. In 2005, the Ellie Caulkins Opera House opened at a cost of $92 million. It anchors the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, the country’s second largest such center and surpassed only by the Lincoln Center in New York. Downtown Denver is also home to the 16 th Street Mall, a sixteen block long stretch of restaurants and shops in the heart of downtown. Located near the Performing Arts Complex, City Lights Pavilion, Coors Field, and the Colorado Convention Center, the mall is designed for pedestrians, with no cars allowed.
