Stamford is a city in Fairfield County, Connecticut. It has an estimated population of just under 120,000 people, making it the fourth largest city in the state. Stamford is located in the Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk Metro area, which is also a part of the Greater New York Metro Area. Nearby cities and communities include; Darien, NYC, Port Chester, Norwalk, New Canaan, White Plains, Westport, Fairfield, Wilton, and Bridgeport.
Stamford officially became a city in 1640, and was incorporated in 1893. During the Eighteenth century, one of the primary industries of the town was merchandising by water. This was made possible by Stamford's close proximity to New York. In the late 19th century, New York residents built summer homes in Stamford, and soon many moved permanently to the area, commuting to Manhattan by train. Commercial real estate boomed in the 1960’s and 70’s, with many tall office buildings being built in the downtown area.
