Waterbury is a city in New Haven County, Connecticut with an estimated population of around 108,000 people, making it the fifth largest city in the state of Connecticut. Waterbury is 33 miles southwest of Hartford, and 77 miles northeast of New York City. Other nearby cities and communities include; Naugatuck, Southbury, Cheshire, Watertown, Meriden, Bristol, Thomaston, and New Britain.
Waterbury was first settled in 1674 and was incorporated in 1853. Throughout much of the first half of the 20th century, Waterbury became an industrial powerhouse, and was the leading center in the US for brassware manufacturing. This gave Waterbury the nickname of “Brass City”, a name that sticks even today. Metal works are still a big part of the Waterbury economy, but the slight decline in the manufacturing industry in the Waterbury area has given rise to a host of new industries such as information technology, research, engineering, and many more.
