Economy/Jobs:

The city of Richmond is the capital of the state of Virginia. It is a large independent city and has an estimated population of around 200,123 in the city core, and upwards of 1.2 million residents in the greater metropolitan area. The city has seen a great growth and development, and is home to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and one of the 13 United States courts of appeals. It has a deep history that reaches back to the founding of the nation and has a diverse economic picture.
The economic history of Richmond is diverse, and offers a great diversity of companies that employ millions. The area has been named the third best city for business by MarketWatch and is seeing as much growth as some other areas in the Nation. Some of the bigger companies in the area include CarMax, Owens & Minor, Genworth Financial, Altria Group, Brink’s, Massey Energy, Universal Corporation, and Markel, just to name a few. The area has a large financial and business district in the downtown area, as well education, manufacturing, and transportation industry. The unemployment rate of the city has recently risen to 9% and is higher than the national average.

Population/Crime:

Despite the large population, the area does not have any major league professional sports teams. There are three minor league teams are in the area. The teams include the Richmond Kickers, The Richmond Lions, and the Richmond Renegades, all of which have a good overall winning tradition. The city is also a great hub for Division I and Division II NCAA sports with the University of Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Virginia Union University all compete in the area. Aside from minor league sports, the area has a great tradition of professional wrestling.
The area crime rate is 85 per one thousand residents and has seen some troubled years in the last decade. Despite an increase in crime in certain areas, there are still safer neighborhoods in the greater metropolitan area. One survey even went as far to say that 90% of the communities outside of the city center had lower crime rates then the central part of the city. Like other large cities, the area has pockets of crime, and has seen some changes. Local law enforcement agencies have been making a concentrated effort to calm the hard areas.
