The third largest city in the state of California and the tenth largest city in the United States is San Jose. The city has been known as Silicon Valley for it’s great abundance of high technology companies. It was once a farming community, but has since become one of the largest magnets for technology and industry. Founded in 1777, the city has a deep Spanish history and was once a major Spanish military installation.

Local Economy:

The economic picture of the area relies heavily on technology with .coms and the internet basically calling Silicon Valley its home. Google and Yahoo are the 2 big web companies that are based in the Bay Area. The tech bubble grew the residential areas by leaps and bounds, and it still maintains a high concentration. The major companies in the area employ upwards 405,000 residents with jobs from entry level and above, helping technically savvy people gain a foothold in industry. Some of the larger companies in the area include Adobe Systems, BEA Systems, Cisco, SunPower, eBay, Hitachi, Lockheed Martin, Flextronics and IBM just to name a few. The cost of living in San Jose is amongst the highest in the United States, yet it is also the highest in terms of disposable income. Despite a large amount of vocations to take advantage of, the area has an unemployment rate of 11% and has had a hard time dealing with the national economic downturn of 2009. Job growth continues to be a focus of the area, and it still inspires many to seek greener pastures in the area and outlying cities like Sunnyvale, Cupertino, Milpitas, Campbell, Los Gatos, Santa Clara and Gilroy.

Sports / Culture:

There is a great tradition of sports in the area, but only two major companies still compete in the greater city limits. The major teams in the area include the San Jose Sharks in the NHL, the San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS, and many other small teams in the minor leagues. The area is in close proximity to the San Francisco area and there are many more teams there that resident Silicon Valley cheer for.
The greater San Jose metropolitan area has a low overall crime rate. It’s interesting to note that for a city of relatively large size, the crime rate is around 30 per 1000 residents and is lower than the national average.
