The southern most city in Canada and one of the most populated is Windsor. Located in the province of Ontario the area is one of the larger and most recognized cities in the nation, with a long history and extended population. The estimated population of the city of Windsor is 216,473 in the core, and an estimated population of 323,342 in the greater metropolitan area. The area was primarily settled by Native American people, but was later turned into French colony, around 1749 as a major hub for agriculture. It is noted that the city is the longest settlement in the nation of Canada to the west of Montreal and was originally named “Petite Cote” (Little Coast). The area has a deep French heritage that remains to this day, with many street names, locations and areas named in French. The language spoken is predominantly French, but English abounds as well. The climate of Windsor is on par with the rest of the province of Ontario. The climate does receive some harsh weather in the winter months, and it is relatively cold. It can get below freezing on many consecutive days. The annual snowfall is roughly 50 inches. The summers get very hot and humid at times with temperatures averaging in triple digits at the peak. The area does receive a good amount of extreme weather at times, with tornadoes and storms hitting the area.
